General Info

The Tees Barrage International White Water Centre originally opened in 1995. It is an artificial whitewater course situated on the north bank of the River Tees, in North East England. It was purpose built as part of the £50 million Tees Barrage Project – to help re-generate the area of Teesside. After successfully running for 15 years, the decision was made to upgrade the existing course to increase opportunities for participation in paddle sports, as well as to attract visiting Olympic and World Class Teams to the venue. It was also identified that the upgrade would ensure a sustainable future for the course and provide adventurous activities for people of all ages and abilities.

The re-development project started in January 2010 which was made possible through several funding partners including Tees Active, who now manage this world class facility. Tees Active is a charitable leisure management organisation operating in the UK. Established as a non-profit-distributing company, it started operating on 1st May 2004.

Tees Active was set up with the intention of taking on the management of facilities provided by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and works very closely with the council as its main funding partner.

In February 2016 Tees Barrage introduced its first land based activity, the mighty fixed ropes attraction Air Trail, which at 18m is the UK’s biggest – it’s the same height as four double decker buses! Also incorporated, are two zip rails that whizz explorers the full length of the structure, the only ones in the world outside of the US. Plus, there’s also Air Tykes, a smaller version of Air Trail that allows mini explorers who aren’t tall enough to have their own adventure.
